This is a excellent spell binding book that the reader finds had to put down. You are drawn to read more and more and it unravels assessments and clinical skills. The book is both entertaining and educational. It education the paramount component. The entertainment comes from the fabulous inclusion of pictures, drawings, tables and highlight boxes
Pictures always tell many stories and is a great tool in education. This book contain a step by step approach in pictures. This gives the reader a chance to learn the skills. The correct hand positions and movements shown that are needed to apply the skill successfully in the clinical setting.
The drawings placed in the book are first class. These have been sourced by a variety of illustrators. These quality works allow great knowledge transfer and demonstration of skill. Highlights and labeling of these drawing show landmarks and positioning that these skills require. This is a key feature of the book.
The book has a sense of order and the sections follow a path of knowledge. this allows the reader to build on skills and knowledge presented earlier in the book and within the chapters. The book uses a colour coded sectional guide. This allow the reader to easily navigate around the book.
The book is well referenced with the appropriate significant science to back up the knowledge contained in the book.Appropriate significant international studies are acknowledged in the text and tables. This gives a leading 2014 edge the the knowledge presented.
The video package that accompanies the book give further educational value. It is the icing on the cake for the book and completes the loop knowledge from the text, pictures, drawings and tables. This take any mystery out as experts share their knowledge and skills.
A strength of the book is that it recognises some practice variation and in corporates it into the book for the author to learn. This reviewer encounters several different ways to apply skills that is current clinical practice not previously known. Knowledge of these variations is useful when working with other from different clinical backgrounds and experiences.
The book contains a excellent section on emergency department thoracotomy. This reviewer has not seen this previously in a emergency department textbook. The pictures and drawings show the life saving procedures very well. This would help the assistants provide the surgeons requirements in both equipment and assistance.
The book contain assessments and procedures in some unusual areas that many practitioner will find rare. This of course is the nature of Emergency Medicine. This make this book extremely useful in those situations. Many emergency department procedure are rare events. Some procedures may be a once or twice in a career skill that need to be pulled out of the bag of tricks. This book will be of assist in these situations and hlep the practitioner out of trouble.
The textbook come in a durable hardback covering. Able to take a knock in the clinical setting. This ability will make this book ideally placed in the department for constant use.
Weaknesses
The reference section is hidden from the book as it placed in the on-line section. Although large in nature the reference section tucked away in the fashion is not ideal.
There are some American English in the book that needs some interpretation. This reviewer that this though is the target commercial audience for the book.
Recommended Readership
All emergency practitioners either nursing, medical and allied health will benefit from the knowledge that this book presents. It is a book for all disciplines working in emergency medicine due to its expanse of knowledge covering all topic bases.
The book will suit both a novice and experienced practitioner. A ED consultant and a first day ED healthcare care worker could enjoy this book and learn from it. A novice student or a senior educator will be able the benefit from this excellent publication.

This is the first Roberts and Hedges textbook that this reviewer has read. It was a amazing read from the first glances to in depth reading and analysis. The book can be used to problem solve so many problems in the clinical setting. This book will be a purchase and I highly recommend this book to all. Well done the Roberts and Hedges team on a superb edition. Emergency Medicine will be well served by your efforts. So do yourself a favour.
