NBA Update: Patient Blood Management (PBM) Guidelines matters. [SEC=OFFICIAL]

Good afternoon,

On behalf of the National Blood Authority (NBA), I am writing to provide you with an update on a few matters related to the Patient Blood Management (PBM) Guidelines.

Please feel free to circulate this information to interested Society/College members and/or colleagues.

PBM Guidelines Modules 2-6 now on MAGICapp

PBM Guidelines Modules 2-6 are now available electronically on MAGICapp (links below).

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 2 Perioperative (2012)

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 3 Medical (2012)

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 4 Critical Care (2013)

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 5 Obstetrics and Maternity (2015)

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 6 Neonatal and Paediatrics (2016)

The electronic version of each guideline provides the same content as the original PDF version available on the NBA’s website. Please note, they were not developed using GRADE methodology and therefore do not strictly fit into the MAGICapp evidence to decision framework. The guidelines are based on FORM methodology, an Australian method for formulating and grading recommendations in evidence-based clinical guidelines.

The PBM Guidelines are to be reviewed. While the review is underway, the original Modules 2-6 remain available to guide practice until they have been updated. All updates will be published on MAGICapp.

The Patient blood management guidelines for adults with critical bleeding (2023) and Guideline for the prophylactic use of Rh D immunoglobulin in pregnancy care (2024) remain available on MAGICapp and the NBA website.

PBM Guidelines Modules 2-6 – Limited Hard Copy Availability

The NBA has a limited number of PBM Guidelines Modules 2-6 (and their associated Quick Reference Guides) available in hard copy free of charge; once these volumes are exhausted, no further hard copies will be available.

Orders can be placed through the NBA’s Publication Order form.

Updating of the PBM Guidelines

As you will be aware, the NBA is planning to review and incrementally update (where necessary) on MAGICapp, the PBM and Rh D guidelines over the next few years. We are hoping to commence this program of work within the next 3-6 months.

If you are interested in participating in this process, for example by providing clinical or consumer expertise, please email Guidelines@blood.gov.au. We will follow up seeking further information on your expression of interest.

Thank you to those organisations which responded to the Stakeholder Survey circulated in July 2024.

Any further comments/feedback on the PBM Guidelines can be emailed to Guidelines@blood.gov.au. Comments/feedback may address:

  • guidance that should be removed from the existing guidelines
  • topics that are not currently addressed in the guidelines or the list of proposed/updated research questions (2018) that should be investigated
  • research questions/topics that should be prioritised.

Your comments/feedback is appreciated.

Should you have any questions about the PBM Guidelines please to not hesitate to reach out to us at Guidelines@blood.gov.au.

We appreciate your time and input.
