PTLS – Paediatric Trauma Life Support

Course Purpose

Trauma is the most common cause of death in children over 1 year of age. Pre-hospital and in-hospital providers must be familiar with the differences between adults and children in order to decrease the mortality and morbidity of injured children. Many injured patients arrive at emergency departments and need to be cared for until they can be transferred to a specialty children’s hospital.

This course is designed to teach pre-hospital and hospital health providers the skills necessary to recognize mechanisms of injury, assess and perform critical interventions and package and transport the injured infant or child. The primary purpose of the course is to provide the participant with the fundamental knowledge and experience necessary to get the paediatric trauma patient to the emergency department and then to the most appropriate definitive clinical care area.

The Australian College of Emergency Nursing (ACEN) is the sole provider of the Paediatric Trauma Life Support Course (PTLS) as developed by International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The provider course is conducted over a one day period and offers competency level paediatric knowledge and psychomotor skills associated with the delivery of professional clinical care to the injured paediatric patient.

Overall Course Objectives

On completion of the course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Describe the characteristics of life-threatening injury in children
  2. Identify the anatomic and physiologic characteristics of children as a basis for signs and symptoms
  3. Identify the most frequent causes of injury in children
  4. Describe the assessment of children with injury
  5. Plan the specific interventions needed to manage the child with injury based on the assessment findings
  6. Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions related to patient outcomes
  7. Identify health promotion strategies related to the paediatric population

Course Content

Lecture topics include:

  • The injured child – families and child development
  • Assessment of the paediatric trauma patient
  • Head and spinal trauma
  • Thoracic and abdominal trauma
  • Special considerations in the paediatric patient

Skill stations facilitate application of theory in a risk free setting, which simulate paediatric patient situations. Teaching stations include:

  1. Patient assessment
  2. Spinal motion restriction
  3. Airway management and chest decompression
  4. Fluid resuscitation

Course Particpants

This course is suitable for all pre hospital and hospital health care providers involved in the delivery of emergency care for the injured paediatric patient. It is suggested that participants should have undertaken ITLS, PHTLS, TNCC or ENPC prior to undertaking this program.

Course Completion

To successfully complete the course, participants must achieve passing scores in a multi-choice exam and 1 psychomotor skill station.

The Australian College of Emergency Nursing will award 10 continuing education hours to participants who attend the entire course, regardless of their performance during testing.

The comprehensive manual provides all the essential course material and should be thoroughly reviewed by the participant before the course. The participants should receive their manual 6 weeks prior to the course.
